Gender Equality in the Nordic Countries

This blog is meant to share my experience at the University of Oslo Int'l Summer School.  I am here taking a course entitled, "Gender Equality in the Nordic Countries."

So far our group has been doing some sight-seeing to familiarize ourselves with Oslo.  I will include some photos below:

Vigeland Scupture Park is a major highlight in Oslo.  The massive green park features the work of the sculptor Gustav Vigeland.  A few of my favorite sculptures are below:






We also visited the Holenkollen Ski Jump and ski museum.  See below:




The Viking Ship Museum features viking ships that have been amazingly well-preserved over time...



The 2018 Int'l Summer School Opening Ceremony was held at the University of Oslo in a venue that formerly hosted the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony.  After the ceremony, we moved to the Oslo City Hall for a reception:




The Oslo City Hall sits across from the Nobel Peace Prize Museum - one of the MOST INSPIRATIONAL exhibits I have ever seen...


And finally, randomly, I will finished with a photo of PAVLOVA, a traditional Norwegian dessert that was apparently named after the famous Russion ballerina.  It is mouthwatering!!

Last Few Days ISS

During the last few days, I have visited Ekeberparken, a gorgeous sculpture park with panoramic views of Oslo:               My favorite sculpture is the "Walking Woman"  ~~~~~     A friend and I also went to the Sorenga saltwater pool, an outdoor pool built into the fjord - super amazing!  And busy since Oslo is hot this summer...     I also had the opportunity to meet some more of my Norwegian relatives...     Our ISS had the final intercultural evening with the student's various country booths and a talent show:      My favorite part of the talent show was a powerful documentary created by one of our students from Brazil.  It is about Rio councillor Marielle Franco, an activist who was assassinated this spring allegedly by Brazilian police, whom she had openly criticized.  RIP Marielle, and thank you for inspiring and leading us.  We must not let these deaths be in vain, but rather continue to fight for justice.

Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art

Yesterday I visited the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art.  Gorgeous collection - here are two of my favorites: Sigmar Polke's "Apparizione (1-3)" Anselm Kiefer "The High Priestess/Zweistromland" More that I loved (they can't all be my favorite!).  The art below is from the "I Still Believe in Miracles" exhibit, and features works from the Selvaag Art Collection. Olafur Eliasson's "Black and Yellow Double Polyhedron Lamp Doug Aitken's "Metallic Handstand" Fischli & Weiss "Untitled (Blumen)" Damien Hirst's "Eulogy"           And finally, one that I rather didn't like... Damien Hirst's "Mother and Child (Divided)" The museum description says that Hirst is trying to complicate Christian iconography and to make a statement about the use of animals in science.  BUT, as we can see, it is jarring to see the insides of the cows contrasted wi

Updates

Below are my most recent photos and updates. The most exciting thing that happened in the last week was visiting my great-great-great...grandparents' farm north of Oslo.  It is a BEAUTIFUL village nestled in a valley with a river running through it.  Below are photos of the village and valley: And below are photos of the family farm: I stayed with some beautiful people, neighbors of my family.  One of my new friends is a knitting enthusiast like me:   AND makes the most amazing lefse - just like my grandma .  :) Interestingly, Mt. Tron Peace University is hoping to build its campus nearby...  If they succeed, they will have one of the world's most beautiful campuses!!  This would be the view...
